Dawn Lowe, PhD, is a Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. She earned her doctorate at the University of Georgia in Exercise Science studying skeletal muscle physiology and completed post-doctoral work first at the University of South Florida in aging muscle biology and then at the University of Minnesota in muscle biophysics. The focus of her research program is cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle deterioration that occurs with age, disease, and injury and in particular how lack of the female sex hormone, estradiol, affects the deterioration. This research has garnered support from the National Institute on Aging consecutively for nearly 20 years, progressing from R03 and K02’s to multiple R01s, one of which has received funding for years 16-20. Dr. Lowe is also highly collaborative in the area of muscular dystrophy. She has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Lowe invests in training the next generation of scientists in muscle biology and aging. Her mentoring acumen is reflected by separate awards she has received for mentoring graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and junior faculty.
