Christina Camell is an Associate Professor at the Masonic Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism and a faulty member of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics at the University of Minnesota. She received her Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine and performed postdoctoral training with Dr. Vishwa Deep Dixit at Yale University. She is a recipient of the McKnight-Land Grant Professorship and the Fesler-Lampert Chair inAging Studies (2021). The research in her lab focuses on fundamental questions addressing the biology of aging: how does inflammation promote age-related diseases? And, can those changes in the immune system be targeted to improve health-span? She is particularly interested in the visceral white adipose tissue, an organ that shows early signs of immune activation during aging. Her research has revealed distinct roles for immune cell subsets in the adipose tissue that become senescent-like – including an inflammatory and exhausted phenotype of CD8 T cells, macrophages and B cells. These age-dependent phenotypes have a negative impact on adipose tissue function, such as lipolysis, and on the resilience of the older organism. These concepts of research will provide insight into the need for an appropriately functioning immune system and the consequences of the dysfunction seen in older organisms.
